Succulent Propagation Using Leaves

I received a beautiful succulent for Easter this past year. Of course, because I am really into propagating plants lately… I had to give this a try too! I am not super familiar with different types of succulents, but it seems like a lot of different types can be propagated this way! Basically, you use the leaves from your parent plant to produce new baby plants!

First, cut off the top of the plant at dirt level. Then, gently wiggle and remove the lower leaves from the plant, leaving enough for a “mini version” of the original. Replant the mini version of the plant into succulent dirt. The spots where the old leaves were connected will eventually callus over and produce roots!

Fill a tray or pot with succulent dirt and space the removed leaves out on top with the side facing up that was upward on the plant. Generally, they have a slight curve upward so it shouldn’t be too difficult to tell which side is up! I planted the original roots into the center of one of my pots as well. Do not water! Wait at least a few days before watering so the spot where the leaves were connected to the stem can callus over. This is where the roots and new baby plant will stem from! I waited about a week before I gave these leaves a little water.

Taking care not to overwater as that may cause the leaves to rot, place the leaves in an area with bright light, such as a south facing window and wait! Propagating is not a quick process, but trust me when I say it’s very rewarding!

Eventually, you will start to see some baby plants and some roots! It is not likely that all of the leaves will survive, so don’t feel bad if some dry up without producing anything. Once there is a baby plant and roots, the original leaf will also dry up, because it’s job of providing nutrients and moisture to the developing plant is complete!

Eventually, you can transplant these into their own pots!

Have you ever propagated succulents? What advice do you have?? Let me know if you have any other tips and tricks! 🙂

  1. I have definitely overwatered this succulent before when propagating. Next time I’ll wait 3 days like you suggest. Thanks for sharing!
