Cut Flower Plans for 2024

Last year was the first year that I planted flowers dedicated to cutting. I fell in love! I love growing and arranging my own flowers and having my designs fill my house. I also love being able to bring them around to my family and friends. Flowers have the ability to make someone’s day… and I just love that.

For many years I have been trying to figure out how exactly I want to share my excitement for plants with the world. It all started with this blog… and I thank you so much for being here! Even if I don’t post for awhile, it is so encouraging to see that people are still able to reference Life on Lady Slipper Lane for information! It makes me so happy to have a small community of like-minded people out there with the goal of living their best life!

In recent years I have found a love of a crop that I hadn’t grown before which is cut flowers. It is so much fun growing flowers and plants that are specifically for cutting and bringing inside to create with. I am thrilled to be expanding the cut flower garden this summer! When I say expanding… I mean we are at least quadrupling the number of seeds that I am starting with this purpose! If you are local, I hope to see you at the farmer’s market where we plan to have our locally grown cut flowers available! I can’t wait to share the beauty of fresh bouquets! If you aren’t local, no worries! I will share as much as I have time for on here too!

Like many with interests in this area, I have been following and learning all that I can from other flower farmers such as Floret. Where I live, we have florists and green houses, but we don’t have a consistent supply of fresh cut flowers. I hope to fill this gap while also sharing my experience along the way. We can learn together and I welcome any feedback that you may have!

So… enough of my rambling… let’s get to the good stuff. In the past, I have grown many different flowers. I get to add even more this year! Here is a list of what I’m planting this year in the cut garden!

  • Sunflowers
  • Dahlia
  • Zinnia
  • Snapdragons
  • Celosia
  • Strawflower
  • Lisianthus
  • Dianthus
  • Cosmos
  • Rudbeckia
  • Marigold
  • Ranunculus
  • Cynoglossum
  • Lavender
  • Statice
  • & Greenery!

I have multiple varieties of many of these types and I am excited to compare them! I have already started the Lisianthus seeds and I can’t wait to start the rest! In an attempt to keep more organized this year, I have also created a binder with information sheets on every variety that I am growing. I included any information that I currently find relevant and will update that as I go! I will also put together a post on how I created and organized my binder in case you are also looking to be more organized this garden season! Spring is coming! :). I will try to share more specifics about the cut flowers now that I have some experience growing them. I feel like as gardeners, we are constantly learning. There is always more to know and I personally love experimenting with new ideas, varieties, and ways of doing things.

My husband, Caleb, will also be joining in on more of the cut flower gardening this year. We are considering possibly growing this into a small business some day which would be an absolute dream! For now though, we are just going to grow, sell at the market, and see where the adventure takes us! Until next time, thanks for being here! 🙂
