How to Make an Autumn Wheat Wreath Using a Wire Hanger and Twine

It’s harvest season here in Northern Minnesota and I couldn’t help but notice the gorgeous wheat fields! I saw a video online of someone making a wreath out of wheat using a wire wreath form and floral wire, but I didn’t have those supplies. So… Caleb’s mom and I went to work using what we had available which included wire hangers, lots of twine/jute, wheat, and a tool to cut with. We harvested the wheat using pruning tools and collected it in a cardboard box. It was so much fun that I had to share it!

First, form your wire hanger into a circular shape. You can bend the hanging hook into whatever form you would like to use to hang your wreath up! We both bent it down to hide it and into a smaller hook that would hang on a nail.

Next, collect a small bundle of wheat and arrange it in your hand so that it has a full appearance. Place your bundle on the wire hanger, allowing the wheat to follow the curve of the hanger. The wheat should be “facing” one side. Secure your bundle of wheat to the rounded portion of the hanger using a piece of twine. You can cut the wheat stems any time, just be sure to leave enough so it can be securely fastened with the twine.

Collect another bundle of wheat and arrange it. Place this bundle right over the top of your first bundle, but have the bearded (seed) end slightly lower and covering your previous knot. Repeat this process until the entire hanger is covered with wheat in a beautiful circle! Remember to cut the stem ends off periodically so your base isn’t too thick!

When you near the end of the wreath, you may need to add an extra bundle facing the other direction to use as filler. Honestly, just keep filling and tying until you are happy with how your wreath is looking! I will say that it takes a lot more wheat than you would expect!

When you are finished, you can seal the wreath with a matte sealer. We used a spray on sealer for paintings. Maybe hairspray would work if you are wanting to somehow seal the wheat?

I love how these turned out and they were such a fun afternoon/evening project! I’ve already been planning my decor garden for next year and it will certainly include wheat! Like seriously… how fun would a wreath making party be?!
