Propagating Pothos From Cuttings

Pothos are a gorgeous houseplant! They have beautiful coloring and look incredible when allowed to trail down a pot, table, or shelf! Who wouldn’t want to make more of these beauties! Luckily, it’s super simple!

Start by taking cuttings from a healthy parent plant. Long runners will be able to provide multiple cuttings. Be careful not to cut too much off though as this may stress out your plant. I don’t cut off more than 1/3 of the total runner at a time. Cut stems so cuttings have a leaf and a small bud as shown below. Keep in mind you will want multiple cuttings for a single planted pot.

If you look closely, you can see a tiny bud underneath where the leaf stem meets the main stem. This is where your roots will grow from! If you are cutting multiple from the same runner (long connecting stem), I cut in the center of the two leaves.

Place cuttings directly into a jar or glass of water. I like to use canning or Mason jars. Make sure the main leaves are outside of the jar and place in an area of bright, indirect sunlight. I placed mine in an East-facing window.

Change out the water as needed to prevent any mold or bacterial growth. I usually change mine every few days.

After a few weeks, when the roots are a couple of inches long, plant in dirt! I planted 8-10 cuttings in the pot below. This will allow a fuller appearance. Basically, each leaf you see is a separate cutting. How many you want will depend on your pot size!

I absolutely love the look of Pothos and decorate with them often! I am so thankful that they are so easy to multiply! My husband and our bank accounts are also thankful HAHA! 🙂
