We have a couple of different gardens out in the country this year. One is located right by a cabin we refer to as “The Pioneer Cabin.” It was built from an existing building by Caleb, his grandpa, and dad. This area was a Native American summer site and part of a wagon trail in the 1800s. There were two partial buildings left and so they decided to redo the one that was in the best shape. They tried to recreate the cabin from that time period and honestly it turned out so cute! I will try to share that space at some point, or maybe even get Caleb to write a post about it since he knows more of the history!
Anyway, Caleb had a small garden there when we were dating because he felt like it needed one. When we got married, we made it larger! We have been planting in this garden every year since. We started out planting wild flowers, then vine plants, and now the majority of our non-vine plants grow here!

Last year, when we made the garden about 2-3 times it’s original size, we planted 40 strawberry plants and 10 raspberry plants. Since then, they have multiplied and I’m pumped! We planted both June-bearing and Ever-bearing varieties of strawberries, and Caroline Raspberries. The Caroline Raspberries are mow down, meaning I cut them way down in the spring, and they produce fruit in the fall! They are huge, sweet berries and delicious alone, on ice cream, or as jelly! These are located on the back side of the cabin. We don’t till this area!
There is a long area of garden on the side of the cabin were we plant many other things including multiple rows of tomatoes, a row of both hot and sweet peppers, a couple rows of parsnips, couple rows of carrots, couple rows of beets, and a few rows of green beans. We also planted peas around the border of the garden because they generally produce first and for a shorter period of time. We pull the plants once they are no longer producing!
Varieties We Planted
Tomatoes: Beefsteak, Roma, Cherry
Peppers: Jalapeno, Sweet
Parsnips: variety unknown
Carrots: Tendersweet
Beets: Detroit Dark Red
Green beans: Tendergreen IMP Bush Beans
Peas: Sugar Bon Pea (Sugar Snap)
Raspberries: Caroline
Strawberries: Ogallala (Ever-bearing), Jewel (June-bearing)
Can’t wait for everything to start growing and producing! It is so much fun to be able to plant multiple huge gardens! It’s even better that with family living so close, we get a lot of help which makes everything easier and so much more fun! 🙂
You may have noticed in the picture that there is a large stump located in the garden. We attempted to burn it down this year. It burned some, but still isn’t dry or rotten enough to completely burn. It has also been very wet around here so far this spring with all of the rain that we have had! Hopefully next year! The snakes kind of like to hang out there so I’d like for it to be gone… haha! Luckily the snakes in Minnesota aren’t large or poisonous!
Because this garden is close to the water, we are able to use a lake pump to water! Because Caleb’s family lives out there, his grandpa and mom generally take care of most of the watering for this garden! They are awesome!
Hope your planting is going well! I will share more soon! Happy gardening! 🙂
***The picture at the top of this post is from last year! Our tomatoes are not that tall yet, but you can see the side of the adorable Pioneer Cabin!***
