Small Home Workspace With Desk

Caleb and I got married right out of college. We both graduated in May, and married late June. We each lived in dorms and then with our parents up until our wedding day. Needless to say, we didn’t move in with a lot of furniture. Our families gave us some hand-me-down furniture, but ultimately… as far as main living spaces go… we had a dining room table with 6 chairs, a futon, and a chair with an ottoman. Over time, I really feel like we have been able to make this space our home and I’m excited to share it with you!

I’m starting with our small desk/office workspace because it’s one of the first places that I felt was “finished.” There is a small indented location right next to the front door that fits a desk perfectly! I toyed with the idea of a bench and coat hangers, but at the time we had a small puppy who liked to steal hats, mittens, and shoes so we figured this was a better use of the space. There is also already a closet in the entryway, so this seemed to work best for us.

This desk was my first “major purchase” after getting a “big girl job.” It took me weeks to finally decide to buy it. Honestly, I’m pretty sure Caleb actually ended up buying it for me. It wasn’t overly expensive, I just wasn’t used to spending money on things that I didn’t NEED thanks to college tuition… haha. We purchased this desk at Wayfair, but I have seen it on other sites as well!

Caleb and my younger brother picked out the chair at T.J. Maxx. I wanted a comfortable but stylish chair for the desk! I eventually would like to have upholstered chairs in the dining room as well, but I need to work on not spilling so often first! It also works great for putting on shoes or as an additional seat if needed for the dining room table.

The lamp and storage bin on top of the desk I think were both from Hobby Lobby. I’m not 100% sure though! We use the bin for any important mail or anything we need to go through. It’s basically a “catch all” or “junk drawer.” The plant is one of the Pothos that I propagated! The sign was a gift and so was the wooden box on the bottom left side shelf. I have old Christmas card books stored in there!

The rug is 4X6. We actually have this rug here because when it was given to us, Cara decided it was hers and was always laying on it. We needed to have it somewhere where she could use it often! Her upstairs toy box is right next to the desk so she can play with me while I attempt to work on these blog posts! Also… yes… you did read that right. Her upstairs toy box is here… she has multiple. Haha!

The wall is painted in a matte finish and is Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams. I recently repainted all of our living areas for the fourth time…. we have lived here 4 1/2 years. I struggle to find colors that I like. So far, this one is my favorite and I’ve been very pleased with it’s color all throughout the day. Previously, I’ve had issues with gray looking purple or green during certain times of the day. Agreeable Gray seems to be a true neutral!

The big grey clock was purchased at Kirklands. This wall can actually be seen from the entry, living room, dining area, and kitchen. Because of this, we felt it was the perfect place to hang a clock. I would love to say that this made it so we were never late again… but that would be a lie… :). Regardless it is a very nice and conveniently located clock and I think it fits in well with the space!

The picture frame with hooks was a wedding gift. It works well to have our keys here since it is right next to the door. The pictures inside the frames were actually done by Caleb. He loves to paint and is quite talented! You may notice there is still one frame space waiting to be filled. Once he finishes the painting for that frame, it will be added!

I have Cara’s baby pictures printed on canvas on the wall too. They add a little color and their 8X8inch size seemed to fit perfectly on this wall. I like to try to decorate with odd numbers when I’m able to. Luckily, she had three different poses in the same basket! We lucked out that Caleb’s mom used to take pictures professionally and agreed to do a few for our puppy!

Overall, I’m very happy with this space and how it turned out. I use the desk for blogging and Caleb often uses it in evenings or on the weekends when he doesn’t want to “hide away” in his office. It’s a perfect use of the space for us!
