Marigolds

When I was a little girl, my family would always plant marigolds in the flower garden. I had a cute little wheel burrow that I hauled the seeds and my garden shovels over in and it even had a little water tank!

Marigolds are beautiful annuals that grow best in full sun. They grow fairly quickly and easily, so they are a wonderful flower to plant if you are gardening with children!

There are different varieties, but in general the flowers are orange, red, yellow, or some combination of these colors. The varieties also have variations in height.

They grow from seed, which can be started indoors or planted directly into the dirt after risk of frost has passed. It is also very simple to harvest the seeds to use for the following growing season!

Marigold Fact Sheet

I have heard from many people that marigolds also keep pests away! I am trying it out this year, so will let you know how it works… but they are supposed to help with deer when planted in gardens and mosquitoes! How cool is that?! I planted some in my herb garden and have a few smaller pots full of them on the deck which I’m hoping will help with the mosquitoes in the evenings!

I have planted marigolds both in the ground and in pots with success. They don’t seem to be a very fussy plant! Just make sure to give them lots of sun and a drink of water every once in awhile! 🙂

If you have a sunny location, these might be the annuals for you! There are so many different flowering annuals out there. It’s so fun to learn about and attempt to grow all the different options!
