We added a vine garden this year! I am so happy because it’s always difficult to decide where to plant vines due to how much space they need! If planted too close to other plants, they can completely take over a garden. So, we now have a HUGE area for all of our vines!
The picture layout that I created is certainly not to scale, but it is able to give you a general idea. The garden is shaped like a slice of pie. At the very point of the pie, I believe Caleb’s grandpa is planning to plant asparagus. The rest you can see here and get a general idea of how we planted this year.

We have multiple rows of each thing, but that would have made the picture extremely crowded. I haven’t had a ton of success growing squash or onions in the past, and I have no experience with potatoes. Caleb’s grandpa has grown incredible gardens with these things before (in the same location!!!), so he was the mastermind behind this garden! I learned a lot from him while we were planting this garden!
As I have mentioned before, we would like to someday move out to the country by Caleb’s family. Because of this, we have been slowly transplanting some of the plants that I have grown in town out there. The raspberries for this garden were transplanted from the town vegetable garden. I believe we moved about half of what we have in town and ended up with about 40 plants!
Varieties We Planted
Raspberries: Caroline (transplanted from town)
Onion: yellow, white
Potatoes: Norland Red, Norkotah Russet
Squash: Waltham Butternut, Buttercup, Vegetable Spaghetti
Pumpkin: Big Max, Jack O’ Latern
Watermelon: unknown, lost the package :(. I do know I picked the sweetest one they had!
Zucchini: Black Beauty (Squash Zucchini)
There were many, many seeds planted in this area! We spaced rows so that a tiller could easily go in between them to make weeding quick and easy. I’m hoping to have a good crop this year! Like I said, in the past I didn’t have much luck! We had tried to use weed block and plant the vines in holes then covered the rest of the weed block tarp in mulch. The plants grew okay, but our produce was very small. We had been trying to limit the area the vines took up so it didn’t interfere with other plants. I really think this is a much better solution! Excited to see stuff grow! I will keep you posted! 🙂
