Herb Garden

Generally, I just plant herbs in the ground, but they were sometimes difficult to separate from the weeds. My husband’s grandma always has beautiful herb gardens on her back porch, so I decided to try out a container garden this year for my herbs.

With wood so expensive, I tried thinking outside the box… pun intended 🙂

My grandma had a galvanized tub/wash bin that she was no longer using for anything, so she let me use it for my herb garden! It’s really neat looking and plenty large for what I wanted to plant. It also already had a drainage hole in the bottom!

The herbs have been in there about a week and have already survived a couple of large storms without drowning, so I think this is going to work out well!

In the past, we mainly grew basil. However, after making our own spaghetti sauce, we wanted to include more herbs that we use! We also have a dehydrator and plan on using that to preserve the herbs for use through the winter! I purchased all of our herbs at a local nursery this year.

Basil

We use basil in many different dishes. We are unable to use garlic in recipes due to allergies, so we often replace with basil. We use the Dolce Fresca Basil most often and love the flavor! We have dehydrated and vacuum sealed it before, which worked great! It was also delicious in our spaghetti sauce!

Oregano

We purchased the Italian Oregano this year! I have not grown this before, but it is another herb that we use frequently! Looking forward to trying it fresh this summer!

Rosemary

Again, I have never planted this before! I know that Caleb’s grandma likes to put it with her chicken and it’s delicious! The tag says we purchased the Prostratus Trailing Rosemary! Excited to try some new recipes using this!

Parsley

I must admit, I have grown parsley a couple of times. It grew great, but I never remembered to use it! I used dried parsley quite a bit this winter, so we will likely dehydrate a lot this summer to use this fall and winter in soups and stuff!

Mint

We bought Chocolate Mint! It just sounded so yummy! I haven’t tried it… but the dog has! She is always sniffing at this particular herb and did take a bite, but she didn’t eat it. I have no idea if herbs of any sort are safe for dogs, so I’m in the process of training her to leave the herb garden alone! Any recipe ideas for this? Could it make a tea??

Basil (Lemon)

We have grown this previously, and often used it mixed with the Dolce Fresca Basil. It has grown well for us in the past!

Thyme

We have English Thyme this year! This is another herb that I have only used in it’s dried form, but it is used in so many recipes! I am seriously looking forward to improving my cooking skills with all of these fresh herbs!

Marigolds

So, this is not an herb! I don’t have any intention of eating the marigolds, but they are known for keeping the squirrels and other animals out. Due to the delicious aromas associated with herbs, I decided to try planting a couple with the herbs. So far, we haven’t had any issues with animals other than Cara HAHA! The marigolds were planted from seed and started indoors with my grow lights!

I am so excited about having this garden! I am also really excited to be able to use grandma’s wash bin as the container for the garden! It’s neat looking and it’s always fun to find new uses for things that are no longer used! She was over and helped me plant flowers the other day and approved of the herb garden! Excited to get cookin’!
