3 BIG Reasons NOT To Define Your Home and Decorating Style

I have been dreaming of building a house since I was a little girl. As I’ve gotten older, I have found myself on Pinterest searching things like “modern farmhouse floor plans” or “craftsman exterior style.” There are aspects that I love about each of them! Now that we are starting to more seriously explore house plans and styles, I have come to the conclusion that I don’t need to define what type of house I want. The fact is, I want it to be our home. Here are three BIG reasons Not to define your home decorating style!

1. It Limits What You Look At

I found myself searching the internet for specific styles and layouts. Problem is… I change my mind… like a lot. I need something that can change with me. Like I said in the introduction, I also like aspects of many different home styles! I love the brickwork generally highlighted on craftsman homes, but I don’t love how “blocky” they appear. Farmhouse style seems to have a ton of white. Like a ton. White is very clean looking, but with all of the neutrals out there, why limit myself to white?

In broadening my search, I’ve found that there are so many cool aspects to each defined home style, both inside and outside. There are so many ideas out there! Check them all out! You might miss out on something really neat and practical if you limit what you are searching for!

2. It Silences Creativity

We have all Googled or searched Pinterest for ways to decorate this or that or what color to paint our walls. While it is okay to be drawn to a specific style, don’t be afraid to look at other things too! I like to go by the whole if I love it, I get it. Granted, that will also depend on other factors such as the price, but overall chances are that if I like something I will be able to fit it into my home decor.

When you are searching for planters, don’t just look at the modern white ones. They ARE beautiful, but especially if you have multiple plants, you don’t want them to all look the same. If you like the modern white, check out some of the other neutral colored pots, maybe even with a white design. Or… go a little crazy and add a pop of color to your setup. But again, only get the pots that you like. Don’t go into the store determined to come out with a blue pot just because I told you to add color. I’m just saying to go in with an open mind, and walk out with something you love! Something that fits YOUR style, regardless of if it fits the “modern” style.

3. It Hides Your Individuality– And You Are Awesome!

Quit telling yourself that you aren’t creative. Actually, quit telling yourself that you are or aren’t anything. Fact is… you are you… and I am here to tell you that is enough! When someone walks into your home, they are getting a little insight as to who you and your family are. They are coming to see you, not your house. Your house is in the background though and also giving off an impression. Let it show who you are! Not what a defined style tells you that you should be. Add a touch of you and your family to your decor!

I love to take pictures. I have pictures up all over my house because the people in them make me happy. Some are on canvas, because I love that look. Others are in frames that I saw when I was shopping once and loved. I also have frames from when I was in high school that I thought were cool. None of these match, but I have them in different rooms and places and feel that they flow well where they are within my home.

Your home should be a collection of what you like. You have a style of your own and honestly, it’s likely that everything will match and flow well together because you have your own style and specific types of things that catch your eye. If you generally like “traditional” styled things, there is nothing wrong with that! My only point is that you don’t need to title or try to design your space according to a label. There is no sense placing your creativeness in a box. Create a space that you and your family love. Don’t worry about labels.
